Superbowl With a Wizard
We’ve known Art Zugnoni for about forever. And he’s been wandering this planet for about forever, turning 90 extremely young years this past November. Everyone uses so much hyperbole anymore – well, everyone but me, just the facts, ma’am – that 90 years young sounds like baloney. But let me make my case:
- Every year, we get together to watch the Superbowl, this year included. Last year, when Art was merely 89, the dog sneaked front paws up onto the table to check out all the food sitting there. Art jumped up, RAN to the other room, and got the dog down.
- At the age of 88, he decided he needed a new fence. So, he went out, got all the materials, tore down the old fence, dug the fence post holes, mixed the concrete and poured it, sank the new posts, added the boards, put in a gate and then called it an afternoon. In the summer sun. Only comment, “Wow, that made me kind of tired.”
- Up until this year, he has wanted some extra money, so he has been working 20 hrs./week in a machine shop. I’m not sure if he is still doing it. He’s been awfully busy with other stuff and he may just be doing custom work out of his garage.
- He just built a Tesla coil in his garage! Old people don’t do crap like that. Young people don’t do that! He saw one on Myth Busters, one of his favorite shows and decided he would make one for himself. Don’t believe me? Watch this video:
Note: what this video shows is the actual Tesla Coil that Art built operating in his garage. It’s pretty impressive!
How cool is that?
Art was just written up in the local news rag. You’ll find that there is more that he has done right here:
The Wizard of Washington Manor
Apparently 90 is the new 35! Any of you have some unbelievable elders around you? Are any of you unbelievable elders?

That was “electric”! You are only as old as you want to be!
Congrats to Art! 60 is old to some!!
I love these guys like this. I have actually worried that if the world ended and I was the last guy here, I couldn’t make a box out of wood, metal or paper. And I have a direct line to my TV remote guy who I think I am overpaying, but I dont care either.

Conrad, it all depends on how old you would consider one needs to be to an elder. How about 65? Will it qualify?
This post talks about someone I would very much like to meet and also introduce to my father who is now 91plus and going strong. He is incredible in his desire to be active, be in touch with all his contacts made over all these years living in all parts of the world and so disciplined that it is not funny. He is a practicing homeopath and dispenses medicines and advise free of charge. He is quite effective too. People who see the two of us together say that he looks more like my brother than my father!
His latest escapade will illustrate his spirit. He was moving from a town in south about an hour and a half’s flying time. He had wound up everything and the last thing that he needed to do was to hand over his car to the buyer. The airport is 25 kms away from where he lived. He drove himself to the airport, handed over the car and its documents to the new owner, got the payment and boarded the plane to Pune.

Ramana, elder goes with many things, not all of them implying age alone. Churches have Elders and, as in that case, it can mean the wise leaders. I’m thinking you and your dad may be more that kind of elders than just old guys! What a marvelous man your father must be. And passed so much to his son.
And, GL, I’m afraid I’m with you. I’ve marveled at the stuff that Art has made over the years and his son Randy is a mechanical engineer and a prototyping genius. Me…well, I’m better with a blog.
Hi there, I found your blog from… uhmm, back to Tikno.
But anyway, I want to comment that you got a great blog. Very interesting post.
Thank you, Grace! That makes me feel good.
I’ve met my own “Art” recently. Her name is Lisa & she is 89 years young & still interested in life.
I met her when she sat at my booth at a Senior’s Health Fair. She signed up for a stress course because, “I’m a very negative person. I want to live a better life.”
What was interesting to me was her perception that she was “negative”. The better I know her, the more I see what a remarkable & inspirational influence she is to me & through me.
Thanks for showing us how to live with HeART!

Love that HeART pun! I think that we will find over the next years that there are more and mroe alert, engaged, active people of an age that was earlier thought to just be in the “wind down” years.
