Seeking a Laminar Flow

Well, I just come in from a trip back to the Midwest – which is not Chicago, that’s the Mideast – visiting my family in Kansas.  And what is the work situation I find?  You guessed it.  Everything had quit working and half the economy had collapsed.

Now, what are my options at that point?  I actually needed to do something and fast!  Let’s see, I could get up and walk around with a worried expression on my face.  I could deny that anything was wrong.  I could look for someone else to blame.  Or, best of all, I could become tense, angry, frustrated…and take it out on everyone else!

So what’s the worst thing that a person can do facing crisis?  Why, increase turbulence, that’s what.  Just like our little guy in the picture, what you need to do when facing the precipice is seek the laminar flow.  For those non-physicists out there:

  • Laminar Flow: non-turbulent streamline flow in parallel layers.
  • Turbulence: a stretch of water in a river or the sea with disrupted flow caused by one current flowing into or across another current

As Tarzan would say, “Laminar good; turbulent bad.”  So, how do you change turbulence to laminar flow?

  • Remove boulders from the main channel where possible.
  • Let the water flow at an even pace.
  • Redirect the flow, but don’t block it.
  • Relax all tension around the periphery.  Guys know all about this one.

Now, it’s the readers’ turn.  What are some of the things you do to bring laminar flow back into your lives when turbulence intrudes?

  1. As Scott Adams says, “I go vote.”

  2. Is turbulent flow like (sort of) being depressed?
Try this Conard— One self-help book in Japan claims “clenching your butt 100 times a day fights drepression” and gets the laminar flow back. It apparently helps in the relaxation part on the periphery!

You know, Gail, I have to give that a try! LOL You know, even if it doesn’t help anything else, it’s bound to give me buns of steel!

    GL, so did I!

  4. This blog & your delightful take on life bring me such joy. It’s way better than sticking your hand in the prize box at the dentist waaayyyy back then. (Why was the dentist giving away candy, anyway? I digress.)

On Leveraged Intelligence you never know what you’re going to get, but you know that it’ll be great. Unlike that dentist’s prize box….you know it’ll be candy & a set-up for a future trip! (He knew what he was doing.)

Anyway, as someone who is a recovered stressoholic, I am far too familiar with, “I have one nerve left…” Stress depletes us, emotionally, mentally & physically. We have nothing left for ourselves, never mind anyone else. I couldn’t stand how I was and often wondered what was the matter with me.

Restoring the balance between the 2 branches of the nervous system is like rebooting the computer. Images are clear, programmes work & fun is to be had!

After decades of surviving, I am thriving. (crediting that to you!) That’s why I decided to get into the business of teaching others how to increase their laminar flow by transforming their stress.

Here’s my answer to bringing back the laminar flow: Point to yourself. Where did you point? With the exception of very few cultures around the world, most people point to their heart. That’s the key – your heart.

  5. This is wonderful, Bro. The only thing I do in addition to your steps is “Wait to see if laminar flow returns.” between “Let the water flow at an even pace.” and “Redirect the flow, but don’t block it.” Sometimes redirection isn’t necessary if we are simply patient.

I heard on the news that Andy Rooney is celebrating his 90th birthday today. Ever consider applying for his job?

Viki – Sit between us, but no one else would have any idea who I was talking to – and Marianna…you guys make me feel good. Shoot, that’s enough of a reason to keep writing this silly blog right there! Thank you both so much.

And, Sit, I like the addition about patience. Definitely always a key to peace.

  7. I simply go with the flow.

Good to know. We will be cooler over the next couple of weeks, so I think I’ll agitate the people around me.
