The Ding Dong Daddy of the D Car Line

Everybody looks at San Francisco through a narrow media lens, but it has a bawdy past on numerous fronts.  One of the most colorful of it’s long list of rogues is the Ding Dong Daddy of the D Car Line.  Actually, he was the cable car conductor on the Muni F Line, but that doesn’t sound nearly as good.

Francis H. Van Wie had thick glasses and was pudgy and balding.  Apparently, you don’t want to tell that to the 15 wives he had when jailed for bigamy in 1945.  Just to prove that jail just isn’t always the answer, in 1953 he took wife #16 in Los Angeles before divorcing #14 – I guess she was the only one left of his harem at that point – and they tossed him back in the hoosegow.  Then in 1959, he was detained yet again for taking wives #17 and #18.

Dang!  I knew SF Cable Cars were kind of romantic, but who’da guessed???

OK, I’ve offered my wacky character for the day, so the ball is now in the readers’ court.  Toss me back somebody to top the ol’ Ding Dong Daddy of the D Car Line!

BTW, lyrics available to the song immortalizing our “hero” at this link.  If fact…they even have a downloadable ring tone!  How’s that for immortality?

King Sabuza of Swaziland, when he was living, had over 125 wives. He would take a couple of wives each year and they were selected from the Reed Dance. Young girls(many) of around age 14 and up would dance in traditional dress (in reeds or long grass from the waist down)( I thing he would usually pick the perky ones) in front of the King and he would select his new wives. There Ding Dong Daddy take that!! They say he had over 500 children. There Ding Dong Daddy take that! But you have to admire Ding Dong Daddy for trying!!!

  2. I’ll ding-ling past this one as I cannot compete with the stories above.

Well, Royalty are another group altogether. They might need their own category.

  4. Conrad May 28th 2009

Grannymar, I’m thinking that you could compete with your 50 toy boys. Start marrying them in clusters.

  5. Maynard May 28th 2009

Sorry Conrad, I will just say he had 50 wives, so people are not afraid to comment! I know, over 125 wives makes everyone tired. I have trouble handling one!

  6. Conrad May 28th 2009

I know what you mean, Maynard. I couldn’t do it, man.

  7. These stories are fine and dandy, but what about a culture in the world that allows a woman to have multiple husbands, legally? I don’t know of any. It’s not fair. (just for discussion)
I do here, now, that Triads want to be legally married. Where is it going to stop?

  8. Conrad May 28th 2009

Triads? Three people? Bigamy isn’t legal, even for Ding Dong Daddy.

To pick up your thread, if it is legal for men, it should be for women. I would agree with that.

  9. WHOOPPEE!!! Conrad, I like you again!!!!!!!!

  10. One of my favorite Paul Harvey lines—“The penalty for having more than one wife should be —-to have more than one wife…”

  11. Gail, there were societies in India where women were allowed more than one husband. In fact, in our epic Mahabharatha, Draupati gets married to five brothers because, her mother in law tells her chosen one to share whatever he had won with all his brothers!

Maynard and Conrad, you must read about the last Nizam of Hyderabad in India. Try this one for size; http://www.international.ucla.edu/southasia/article.asp?parentid=93148 The number of wives he is supposed to have had varies from source to source but most people believe it to be 80 and he had filled his haren with more than 350 more! A problem of such magnitude now that the estate is being disbursed!

  13. Rummy, money always kills a “good” thing! Question is—- Wives or money? Because if you have wivies , then there isn’t going to be any money after one day at the “mall’! Right ladies?????

  14. Maynard May 29th 2009

Sorry, let me set the record straight. My wife and I lived in Swaziland for 3 years from 1972 to 1975, and we were always told that King Sobhuza had 125 wives and father over 500 children. Well, I was wrong.(slap me in the face) The King had 70 wives( which is bareable), and father 210 children. He died in Aug. 21, 1982 and one of his sons, who was 18 , took over the Kingdom, and is the King today! Forgive me for the mis-information! But it was a very “studly” story. Now Grannymar you can comment!

  15. GL–I Ilike — Tutti fruiti– also!!!

  16. Gail, let us be brutally honest about it. The only guys who will be interested in more than one woman in their lives will be so for one of two reasons. One they have more money than they know what to do with it, and two, the women they are in relationships with already, are not coming up to scratch. In the latter case, if they are not financially very comfortable, they do stupid things like having clandestine affairs etc, but if they have got the money, they do it openly and go even to the extent of flaunting arm candies. In the latter case, they should sure be able to afford to give the candies enough to buy all the malls that they want! Had it not been so, the Nizam of Hyderabad, would have died a pauper. I shall send a cartoon to Conrad and request him to incorporate it here or as an addition to the original post to stress my point.

Any man who wants more than one wife is an idiot and nature does to him just what he deserves!

Marianna, I thought your track was only a very slight diversion – and a delightful one! I think they ultimately achieved a marvelous result.
