A Life Magazine Moment…
I grew up loving to go to my grandparent’s house on the weekend and looking at Reader’s Digest..and Life Magazine! The pictures still stand out in my memory as some of the best chronicling of the Zeitgeist!
Here is the cover on the day of my birth:
And, speaking of births, literally the “girl next door” is 23 today! Yeah! Happy Birthday, Sarah! In celebration, I would like to offer this Life Magazine moment on your birthday, the picture we took when you were a little dink and we had a hole in the fence and our dog Trapper was as curious as you were:
I can just imagine it in the current issue right now…

What a lovely picture.
Happy Birthday, Sarah! Stay as cute as you were!

Strange! I used to go to my uncle’s, (father’s elder brother) bicycle repair shop to read the Reader’s Digest. He used to keep them bound on a annual basis. I continue to subscribe to the RD which is now available in an Indian edition.
I then grew up and was subscribing to the Times and Life and had to stop when Indian magazines started giving more or less the same value for money proposition. Now of course, I can read everything online!
On this day in 1971, which here is the 3rd of July, Ranjan was born, and we have been celebrating his birthday since morning. Exactly the same weather conditions! The only difference is that his mother is not here to join in.

She was a little dolly! Now – she’s merely quite pretty and prepping for grad work as she works with autistic children! A fine young lady, indeed.
Happy Birthday, Ranjan!!!
Hey other father! Thanks for the birthday wishes and posting the best picture in the world. See you tomorrow!
You’re welcome, other daughter!!! Hope your birthday was happy – and we’ll eat lots tomorrow in celebration.
I haven’t decided when my B-day is. It was the 12th in Sumatra where I was born but the 13th in the U.S. where I was registered as a U.S. citizen.
Perfect, bhb, you can tell people that you were born on the 12th of Sumatra!
Tom says I was born on the 13th of Sumatra. I got it backwards.
BHB, a Sumatran yet! You are a Hindu! Welcome aboard!

These are exactly the kind of moments that instigate an “awww”. A very happy birthday to your daughter and may the good times keep on coming!

I too remember going to my grandmother’s house and looking at Life magazine. I especially loved the covers that were Norman Rockwell artwork–what a slice of Americana! We probably all had Life Magazine moments and just didn’t realize it at the time. Thanks for sharing that sweet photo.
After my mother died & the house was sold, I discovered in an attic, a big stack of Life magazines dating back to 1940. Should have saved some.
Happy birthday to Sarah who always reminded me of Shirley Temple with the head of curls she had. I can hardly believe she is in graduate school but I would imagine that she would be very good in the field she has chosen. It was so good for Carly to have her as her next door best friend and mentor. I will always remember Carly watching Carol juggle and getting so tickled she would laugh until she fell on the floor (putting on just a little but not much) the last year we made the trip to Lake Tahoe, California. So much fun until Joe decided to have a heart attack and spend the rest of our vacation in the Truckee Hospital!……but that is another story. We dodged tornadoes July 3….they were looping down about eight miles from us so to the basement we went with a couple of neighbors for company. Maybe that was your eerie feeling Con, it sure made me feel that way, lol.

Rummy, I cannot say that I know how you feel when you speak of your recent loss because I have not walked in your shoes but there is not a day that goes by that I do not give up a prayer because Joe is still with me. I really can hardly remember when we were not together and having our children. Wish your son a Happy Birthday from someone in the middle of the United States that doesn’t know him but knows OF him. He is just really getting started on his journey and I sincerely hope it is a good one. I hoped that for my son and you can see how he turned out!
Viki and Tanya brought our great grandson to see us on July 3 and what a joy little Rylan is. He makes such funny faces that we are sure he will be a clown some day. We put him in a play pen in front of a full length mirror and he spent a long time talking and playing with his own image…..such a funny and happy little boy.
I’m rambling so will close,
Corky
Corky, thank you. That is a nice thing that you have done on this post writing about Ranjan. If he can get to be half as nice a guy as Conrad, I shall be very happy. Conrad, the credit goes to your parents, so, please do not comment any further. Thank you.

Janet, Life Magazine pictures still stand out as the best for me. Of course, I went through that stretch in high school when National Geographic topped the list, but – well – that was an appreciation of nature unadorned.
Ashok, neighbor daughter. But, the dog was mine!
Conrad, I stand corrected, thank you!
