My Little Warrior

She isn’t very big, just a smidge over 5 ft. tall (about 153 centimeters).  A smidge is just about this much – ||.  And, she can seem quite civilized as you can see above.

Yet, we find that going to New Zealand has brought out a different side: a mini Maori Warrior Princess!  She texted this message to me on Sunday:

I’m about to dress in warrior clothes, get my face painted with traditional markings, and do the haka!

I show you the Maori Haka from YouTube:

She said that only the men stick out their tongues – as though that would make me feel better.   Her group was videotaped performing it (not the group above, no) and then put on a DVD that she will be bringing home in June.

But … I’m almost afraid to bring her home …

  1. Best thing to do Conrad, is to politely request her to first visit Mayo, teach him, Millie and Gail to do this, before she comes home. She can film them after they have learnt and you can put that up. That way, the steam would have been dissipated.

  2. When your young and beautiful Carly returns in June, she will have gained experiences and memories to carry her through life. They go away a child and return as a Friend.

I love the “haka”. Bring it on Carly.
Conrad, she will make you proud!

  4. Maynard Feb 10th 2010

I forgot to say– the last time I did the “haka” was when were we in New Zealand in 1975. I’m still vibrating.

  5. bikehikebabe Feb 10th 2010

My best friend used to go to NZ for a couple mo. every yr. for 14 years (until her only offspring-a son, died.) It’s a great place.

She says that after being there 6 mo. you have to apply for a visa. They take Scots, a few Americans, & no English, which they don’t like. She saw Scottish dancing there & of course they love golf. Queenstown was 1,700 people with 4 golf courses.

I’ve done Scottish Country dancing for 30 yrs., but Haka looks more like my style.

Bhb, you would love the ‘haka”. It would make you feel like you were 20 years old again.

  7. It doesn’t look very difficult – a loin cloth and some gutteral chanting – I think I could even pull that off! Well, then again – - -

  8. Deb – We could form teams and have a competition, the girls against the fellas! ;)

Good idea, Ramana, but Mayo already knows it. And, do you really want Mayo, Millie and Gail riled up??

  10. Conrad Feb 10th 2010

Correct GM. And … hopefully they take care of us poor old codgers!

  11. Conrad Feb 10th 2010

Mayo, putting together what you are saying, the last time you did the Haka, you were 25 or 26 and it made you feel 20 again!

Where in NZ were you? We are going there in April and if you have any tips on something we HAVE to see, I am all ears!

  12. Conrad Feb 10th 2010

bhb, Carly has a student visa. We will only be staying for two weeks – and … lol … they require you to get a round trip ticket! Now, why they would not take our Magpie, I don’t know! I may protest – after I come back.

  13. Conrad Feb 10th 2010

Deb, from your description, I feel like I’m back in college again, because a loin cloth and some gutteral chanting pretty much sums it up!

  14. Conrad Feb 10th 2010

GM, you know darn well you two have been teaming up against us poor fellas for a long time! And, we’re sensitive!

  15. sensitive? – SNORT! Good idea, GM – “bring it on” guys!!

  16. Conrad & Deb, roflol! sensitive how are you!

Every time the ‘All Blacks’ the New Zealand rugby union team play a match the Maori Haka is performed on the playing field.

  17. *L* I love the fact that we just know she’ll put her heart and soul into it and be crowned the Queen!
I’ve seen the performance many times before as I’m a rugby fan and the New Zealand players…the All Blacks…are super scary and try to freak out their opponents with it; better watch out when she comes home…”Dad, I think I need a new car….” “I don’t think so, honey” and then she assumes the warrior stance…..actually, this is the natural state for kids, it’s us parents that push it out of them. ;O)
I hope you are well, Conrad, I hate that I’ve missed reading so many blogs, particularly yours and the LBC group.

If everyone else knows except me, I’ll go ahead and show my ignorance – “reflol”? I think I have the flol part figured out!

  20. Ah – love it! I had the “f” wrong but I like it better this way!
Now come on you guys – next time someone else steps up and shows their ignorance! lol

  21. bikehikebabe Feb 11th 2010

IWPWSULBIDKWTM. For all you ignorant people, that means…I wish people would stop using letters because I don’t know what they mean.

  22. bikehikebabe Feb 11th 2010

I know lol, BTW, ASAP, SOB, (WTF My husband had to tell me that one.), CIA (central intelligence agency) FBI (federal bureau of investigation). Don’t know what any other letters mean.

  23. shackman Feb 12th 2010

Conrad I waited til this matured before telling you that in a life priot to our meeting I spent three years in a Polynesian dance group based in Walnut Creek. Hakas were a fave as was the Samoan knife dance which I was pretty good at. And yes I wore a grass skirt – imagine that without laughing. How’d Carly do with the balls the Maori women use?

  24. Margaret Feb 13th 2010

Oh what a wonderful experience for Carly! Hope we get to hear all about it. Back in my younger years had a “kiwi” friend, in the States on a “walk about” and ended up in Bennington KS (of all places). I do remember his dislike of the British.

  25. Con,
The picture of Carly and the tea pot……. she looks an awful lot like the Richters……I hadn’t realized it until I looked at that picture. Sounds to me like the little toad is on vacation, lol.
I still have a grass skirt hanging in the basement closet (if the mice haven’t made nests in it) from our visit to Hawaii…….so much fun!!
    Corky (yo mama)

  26. Conrad Feb 15th 2010

Deb, I’m way behind on the comments! Been on a bit of an American mental walkabout! Sensitive men, like me and Mayo, need that periodically.

  27. Conrad Feb 15th 2010

GM, I have some new Carly pics all made up that I need to get in here.

  28. Conrad Feb 15th 2010

Helen, I’m falling behind as far or further than you! Daughter in New Zealand and when you are busy, you know what happens – the universe piles on!!

  29. Conrad Feb 15th 2010

bhb, you know “bhb” already, IRS, BS – you have a much better vocabulary than you thought!!

  30. Conrad Feb 15th 2010

Shackman, you’ve always been a very good athlete! What people don’t realize as we talk back and forth is what a bear of a man you are, too. I could see you fitting right in with the Samoans.

I don’t know anything about using balls. I will need to find out.

  31. Conrad Feb 15th 2010

The first 8 days are very like vacation for Carly, but now she is in her living quarters at the university and settling in. With a budget…
